"Nordea" Riga Marathon has been awarded the prestigious International Association of Athletics Federation's (IAAF) Road Race Bronze Label for the third year in a row, which is the highest assessment among all marathons in Northern Europe, LETA was informed by Inese Kikule, a representative of the organizers of the marathon.

The organizers expect that the Road Race Bronze Label and the fact that Riga is the European Capital of Culture next year will prompt foreign runners' interest in Riga and bring more top-level athletes for the marathon next year.

Latvia's best marathon runners, Jelena Prokopcuka and Valerijs Zolnerovics, have already confirmed their participation in, respectively, half-marathon and full marathon next year.

The "Nordea" Riga Marathon will take place for already the 24th time on May 18 next year.

This year, 22,020 runners from 65 countries participated in the marathon.
