Autumn in Latvia is so beautiful and it passes so quickly that you must hurry to enjoy it while you can. If you are looking for recommendations for autumn activities then read on.
Catch the golden autumn by the tail and discover Latvia!
Bake bread
Experience the golden autumn not only in vistas and colours, but also in flavours! Warm bread, fresh from the oven, can give you just the right feeling. If you are visiting Latgale, we recommend that you become acquainted with bread baking traditions in Aglona’s bread museum!
We also recommend that you try Latgalian dishes, which are prepared in the museum in keeping with the best traditions.
Travel around Latgale
Plan a walk around the small streets of Ludza Town and see the remains of the medieval castle of Ludza, which will also reveal a panoramic view of the town.
Afterwards, you can visit the “Latgolys šmakovka” distillery and check out the grain journey - from the field to the spirit-making equipment. A stroll around the “Numernes valnis” nature park, where you will find a 20-metre high observation tower, will provide some truly wonderful views. Two star-gazing chairs have been placed next to the tower, allowing you to look out at the beautiful panorama during the day, and, during the darker hours, helping nature lovers to spot falling stars.
Visit museums
There are many museums in Latvia, some of which are unique. We have collated what we consider unusual museums, which prove their bizarre, incredible and boundless nature.
Go on a hike
Autumn is the time to go on picturesque hikes, for example, to explore some of the parts of “Mežtaka” or “Jūrtaka” hiking trails. You can find more information about these hiking trails at baltictrails.eu!
Enjoy the golden autumn in Aluksne
You will discover autumnal colour play in Aluksne region - near the Estonian border. Here the scenery is exceptional, displaying the glory of nature and peace. You will be swept away by the bright colours within the whole territory of the region. But, seeing them from the highest mounds and observation towers within the protected landscape area of “Veclaicene” will give you a very special experience.
At the top of the steepest Latvian castle mound - Drusku hill - while enjoying the view over the orange tree tops, you will spot the highest hilltop in the Baltics - Lielais Munameģis (Big Munameģis). Relish the perfection of the brightly coloured season by going down one of the area's cycle tracks or nature trails.
The lake and the town next to it have a special charm in the autumn. Amber birches, warm autumn breeze and the after-rain smell will soothe you, while you listen to the melodies of the pedestrian bridge on Tempļakalna Street or the whispers of the lantern in the park of Alūksne’s manor. A rail journey will give an appropriate dose of seasonal sentiment on the only regular narrow gauge train in the Baltics, also known as Bānītis.
Clear your head in Liepaja’s Naval Port (Karosta)
The seafront in Karosta is a great place where, on the North Pier or the Northern Fort, you can observe the power of the autumn storms or, during calm weather, explore the historic fortification structures. After an autumn walk, you can warm up in the cafe “Rietumkrasts”, from which there is a beautiful view overlooking the sea.
Take a stroll on a bog
You would think that once you have been to one marsh, you have seen them all, but no. Explore these marshlands for the diversity of nature - some have formed inside a crater caused by a meteor, others are slowly regaining their natural state.
Explore Jaunmoku Castle and its surroundings
Jaunmoku Castle is located on the outskirts of Tukums, where neo-Gothic style shapes combine with elements of Art Nouveau. Nowadays, the castle hosts the Forest Museum, where you can find an exposition dedicated to forestry and hunting in Latvia.
Lielezers Nature Trail in Limbaži
If you are in Vidzeme, then check out the lovely town of Limbaži. Lielezers Nature Trail is located in Limbaži and takes you around Lake Lielezers in less than 4 kilometres; however, if you are looking for something indoors, visit the Live Silver Museum.
